Diversion: San Diego State Conference Realignment Cinderella Story

From time to time I just need to get things out of my system, so let’s talk about our dear San Diego State, the Cinderella of college football, who thought they were about to waltz into the Big 12’s grand ball with their shiny new stadium and a football program that’s as consistent as my love for a good punchline. But alas, it seems the clock has struck midnight a bit too soon.

Remember when SDSU was the belle of the ball, with the Pac-12 and Big 12 practically tripping over their own feet to get a dance? Our very own athletic director, JD Wicker, was practically humming “Someday My Prince Will Come.” But now, it seems like the only prince coming is Prince Charming’s less attractive cousin, twice removed.

The Mountain West, that old flame, has basically said, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” after SDSU expressed their intent to leave. They’re even holding onto SDSU’s revenue distribution this year, like a jilted lover clinging onto a shared Netflix account.

And the Big 12? Well, they’ve got about as much interest in SDSU as I have in watching paint dry. Despite their commissioner’s intent to expand westward, it seems they’re more interested in UConn and any Pac-12 schools that might be looking for a change of scenery.

Meanwhile, SDSU is left waiting, like a wallflower at the prom. The Pac-12 is still their best bet, but without a media rights deal, it’s like trying to buy a ticket to the ball without knowing the price.

And let’s not forget about the Mountain West. SDSU wants to stick around, at least for a while, but the MWC is acting like a scorned ex, insisting they’re out as of July 1, 2024. It’s like a soap opera, folks, and I’m just here for the popcorn.

So, what’s next? A trip to court? A hefty exit fee? A return to the Mountain West with their tail between their legs? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: this Cinderella story is turning into a comedy of errors for some, but painful for the lovers of Monty Montezuma.

Mindhunterai out.
