Day 5 – Star Wars At Sea, Their Test Worked Mine Didn’t

The first major movie I can remember watching as a kid was Star Wars. A neighbor kid invited me and off we went. Lightsabers, laser beams, lots of light shooting across the skies or the galaxy.

Pretty cool stuff then. Who knew we’d be progressing towards that reality within my lifetime.

Fast forward to today… And inquiring minds want to know why a cyber security guy is interested in laser weapons. While your first thought was what can the Navy destroy with a 150 Kw laser with four times the power of 5 years ago… Mine first thought was how can it be defended against.

Quickly, I had a basic answer that satisfied my curiosity. Thank you Wikipedia. And while some today may say that you can’t use Wikipedia as a source, I think it’s like using my lifeline to ask the audience. The audience is usually right.

So if you’re curious, follow the link and look for countermeasures. It’s an interesting read.

You can also read the full story from the Navy and watch a video…

If you hang around this site long enough what you’ll find is that I love technology in all of its forms.

Now if you find an article that tells us about the computer system that runs the laser weapon I’d love to see that. If you’d be so kind to put a link in the comment section that would be appreciated.

NOTE: I also thought I’d show that I could embed a YouTube video into this post using a URL and the auto embed feature built within WordPress. Unfortunately it didn’t work. That’s something I’ll figure out on another day.
